Abstract:

This paper focuses on synthesizing geopolymer mortar based on eggshell powder and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS). The efficiency of geopolymer mortar production was designed using the Taguchi L25 method through 3 factors, i.e., molarity, precursor ratio and curing time. Each of these factors was examined on five levels with a total of 25 combinations. Compressive strength was used to evaluate the performance of the specimens. It was found that the best combination which produced the highest average compressive strength was A5B1C5 of 49.5 MPa at 56 days of curing time. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) result of A5B1C5 show homogeneous and compact surface indicating polymerization process was successful. Furthermore, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) result confirms the formation of aluminosilicate type gel (N-A-S-H), calcium aluminum silicate hydrate (C-A-S-H), and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gels, formed simultaneously. The overall results indicated that eggshell powder and GGBFS show good utilization as geopolymers from waste materials.
