Abstract:
The present article investigates the effect of crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) and fiber additives (aramid fiber and basalt fiber) on laboratory performance properties of stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixtures. Mix design, draindown, cantabro loss, moisture sensitivity, rutting resistance, and fatigue behaviour of SMA mixtures were evaluated. The mix design properties were analysed using the Marshall technique, the draindown parameters were evaluated in accordance with ASTM D6390-11, and the cantabro loss properties were evaluated in accordance with ASTM D 7064. Moisture sensitivity of SMA mixtures were evaluated using modified lottman test, rutting resistance by roller compactor cum rut analyzer, and fatigue behaviour using repeated load test. Results indicate that SMA mixtures with CRMB and fiber additives control binder draindown and reduce abrasion loss. Moisture sensitivity, rutting resistance, and fatigue behaviour of SMA mixture with CRMB was higher than SMA mixtures with fiber additive. However, SMA mixtures with 0.3% of fiber additive exhibited comparable results with respect to SMA mixture with CRMB.
