AbstractThis paper presents test results on 20 square high-strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete columns 125�125�710 mm subjected to concentric and eccentric compression loading. The experimental program was mainly designed to examine the effect of the weight of steel fibers on the behavior of reinforced HSC columns subjected to axial and eccentric compression loading. All columns were longitudinally reinforced with 4 steel bars of 10 mm diameter and steel ties at 64 mm spacing. The test variables studied herein are the steel fiber weight percentage (0, 1.2, 2.4 and 3.6) and the eccentricity (0, 16, 32, 48 and 64mm). The test results showed that adding short discrete fibers to HSC mixtures in reinforced concrete columns not only prevents premature spalling of the concrete cover, but also increases the strength of the axially and eccentrically loaded reinforced columns. This behavior was predicted also by the proposed method that is based on strain compatibility, equations of equilibrium, concrete strength in compression, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, steel fiber content and friction bond strength of the fibers. The stress blocks in compression recommended by the ACI and the CAN are adopted in this method. Predictions were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.
