AbstractUnconsolidated undrained triaxial tests have been performed to investigate the shear strength characteristics of geogrid reinforced sand rubber mixtures. The rubber content (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60%), confining pressure of the cell (19.6 kPa, 49 kPa, and 98 kPa), and the number of geogrids reinforcing layers (1 to 4) was varied to investigate the effect of these parameters. The relative density of sand was kept constant (80%) throughout the test. The test results were evaluated in terms of stress-strain characteristics of the sand rubber mixture. The test results indicate that by increasing the confining pressure of the cell, the same rubber sand mixture with the same relative density and rubber content takes more loads. The peak strength of the unreinforced rubber sand mixture increases with increasing the proportion of the rubber content up to 30%, beyond which it declines with increasing the rubber content. The 50% of the rubber content with four layers of geogrid reinforcement has maximum peak strength and axial strain. The brittleness index of the rubber sand mixture reduces with the inclusion of geogrid reinforcement. The minimum brittleness was found to be 0.042 at 50% rubber content with three layers of the geogrid reinforcement.
